Laying It Down With Leadcore

Many of today's technical rigs incorporate the use of leadcore . By the end of this article, I hope to have explained how to get the best from leadcore, and how to use it safely.

Leadcore is a strong woven braid with a strip of lead wire inside, leadcore has been “borrowed” by carp anglers from fluff chuckers, whom used it to add weight to their flies and get the line to sink quickly.

From my personal experience, Krystons Score is the best leadcore , although Fox and ESP both produce good quality products. Score has a nice black, green and white woven braid, which really helps break up its shape when laying on the bottom, It is also very heavy.

Lines running straight throough mid water spook carp, as they bump into then, this is where leadcore comes into its own. The heavy strip of lead pulls it into the bottom, laying the last 6 feet of your rig nicely flush with the lake bed. The other great property of leadcore is its high abrasion resistance. This makes it ideal for snag fishing situations or fishing the back of a bar.

To get the best from leadcore it need to be fished safely and sensibly. My own opinion is that leadcore should only be used in conjunction with helicopter style rigs. This is due to the fact that if the mainline breaks the fish won't be carrying around a length of leadcore, which could become fatal.

This is how I set up my leadcore;

● Take a 6 foot length of leadcore (score in this case).

● Splice a speed link to one end, this will be wear the lead is attached.

● Push a soft bead down the leadcore to cover the lead of the clip.

● Thread on a 5cm length of silicon and push into bead.

● Splice the other end of the lead core.

● A tightly fitting bead now needs to be placed over the silicon. This bead MUST be able to pass over the top splice.

● Your rig is then fitted via a speed link in between the two beads.

On some waters leadcore is banned, due it getting used unsafely. On these waters there are a few alternatives, weighted leader's by wychwood and the like will pin the end tackle down. The other choice is to use tubing, which can sometime float, when it does float, it is possible to wrap lead around the tub this will send it straight to the bottom.
