When you talk of bolies most anglers simply think of a lovely round bolie from 10mm – 20 mm in size as that’s how most manufactures and boile rollers sell and make them. A nice round bolie looks good to a carp angler and be fired accurately into position up to 80/90 yards with practise with a good catapult or throwing stick. The problem is carp have seen this round ball too many times especially in the UK, and most of the attractors locked in by the outer skin and when it hits the lake bed it might as well sink deep into any weed or silt that there is. To improve bolies you can break hemp by hand or with a food processor. This means that they slowly drift down and are likely to lay on the lakebed where they are easily found. Attractors will leak at a very rapid rate from the broken skin so as to stimulate the carp to feed we hope. Obviously you cannot catapult out broken bolies so you cab get your bait out via a spoding, mixing it in a ball of groundbait, radio controlled boat, PVA bags and suchlike.
Hemp
A top bait one which still continues to catch on all waters it is used on. If you never used hemp before do yourself a favour and use the ready prepared hemp from Dynamite Baits in tins and flasks. It is ready prepared, top quality and carp go wild over it. In time when you are more experienced take a leaf out of Keith Jones articles as he talks about preparing your own hemp.
The great thing with hemp is you can freeze it for use later.
Believe it or not it was not long ago that PVA bags were almost unheard of and apart from writing of Rod Hutchinsonit was quite a secrete world. Now a days the carp world as gone PVA mad and companies such as Nash, fox, Gardner, Korda, Hinders, Richworth and co have all kinds of bags to meet your every need. Without a shadow of a doubt anyone can learn to use PVA bags with practise – at home and on the bank. To learn how to use PVA to full effect look at the Fox and Korda videos. A nice warm room, no rain and a chance to copy the advice from the Korda and Fox boys - ideal. One you have learnt how to load PVA bags and stocking bags with bait and what happens with different make mixes once the PVA dissolves in water. Try solid bags and stocking bags and see what suits you best, don’t automatically believe what manufactures. Happily try it at the lake now? The most important thing to remember with PVA bags is keep them in a water tight box inside the rucksack. Have plenty of dry towels with you at all times. At the lakeside the trick is not to rush and keep it dry. Always wipe everything dry especially your hands don’t rush and if possible site on your bed chair under your shelter to avoid moisture in the air.
