    Hello from USA

Hi, I've been fishing for wild carp most of the past year, getting more and more into it after a lifetime of fishing here in USA. I've caught everything from bass, to trout on the fly, to sharks to seven feet in the surf, but carp has become quite the obsession & I've cared little for any other fishing during the last few months. I've been experimenting with different techniques, mostly method feeders in local creeks, lakes & rivers, using my bass & catfish gear with end tackle and bait from bigcarptackle.com . My PB is currently 14lb common. I've only caught one mirror compared to 15 commons, a small scaled one. Interestingly, we have a carp "scene" here in my state of NC, the "paylakes". They're small heavily stocked ponds that involve mini-tournaments. So carp fishing isn't totally unheard of in my area, but fishing for wild carp is extremely rare. I've not yet met another carp angler on my local rivers or lakes. I love learning about all the legendary UK venues via YouTube, podcasts & forums. I was fascinated by UK carp fishing as a kid when I found a book about it at our local library as an 8 year old, years ago, but then I forgot about carp until recently and rediscovered it with the help of the Internet. I loved the bank fishing taken to high art, unlike the local bass fishing scene, it was similar to the fishing that I did from the bank of my grandmothers farm pond for bullhead catfish and bluegill. I'm hoping one day to make it to the UK to wet a line. Anyways, I hope you all don't mind me lurking and posting occasionally in the Europe forums!

    Hello from USA

Thanks for the welcome! Here's some pics from this year. Cats are a fact of life fishing on the bottom here, especially in summer. I've not found a bait they don't like, even fake corn.

Managed to sneak out for a couple of hours to the club lake this afternoon fished like an idiot to the far bank for a while and wasted an hours fishing made the switch to the margin bush and reeds,I had thrown some baits in already and bang within minutes in melted off with this one Then I got that back out and within minutes it screamed Into action again, whilst playing the 2nd fish my second rod whacked round with another angry carp on, managed to quickly net the 1st and play the 2nd one into the net, so that was a good way to save a blank, 3 carp in the last 1/2 hour of my session It was a nice day, there was a young family walking with there kids and I asked them to take the pics for me it was nice to share the moment, they don't have to be big to put a smile on your face naturally I make them all look smaller 😏

    Thought of the Day pt.2

Still trying to work this lake out .... I did the first 24hrs of fishing from the chalet as the wind was pushing down that end & Dave had first pick & quite rightly set up where a few were showing further up the lake . I know I've only been fishing really for 24 hrs but just not feeling it . It's screaming out to fish tgat end because of the wind but there absolutely nothing showing . With the couple of days being here it would appear that night time is when they give them selves up. So spent the day out in the boat finding harder spots in amougst the silt further up the lake where I heard a few crash out last night. All set know & just hoping moving off my bait & starting a fresh so early in the session will pay off . I've still got a visual on my original spots so in effect I'm still fishing them (if you get what I mean ). The winds still pushing nicely down there , so they might turn up . Dave had a nice grassie in the night so we are off the mark as a pair.

It has been a very healthy year weather wise. No mental heat waves has meant the carp have continued to feed throughout the entire summer and this is reflected in fish weights. All over the country fish are coming out at top weights, MASSIVE weights. It's also done the environment the world of good. The grass is green and the water is clear, unlike last year when the grass was brown and the water was pea green!

Well today it became apparent why we've struggled all week , biggest hatch of damsel fly's I've seen . So should think the carp have been pre occupied with the emerging/ changing nymphs. Just bad timing ... been scratching my head all week & I think I found the answer today.

    freezer bait delivery?

Whenever I have ordered freezer baits, if they turn up frozen I'll say "Good" and whack 'em in the freezer. On the other hand, if they turn up thawed out, or "fresh" I'll say "Good" and whack 'em in the freezer. I've never noticed a reduction in catch rates. or longevity of the bait.

ha I do give great hugs πŸ˜€πŸ˜‰ I quite like doing the short sessions, they are good for making you ring the changes and think fast I still think we could learn a lot from match angling they don't sit about waiting for bites they make them happen

Imo it's essential to light the scene for self takes. The flash on modern DSLR's are good - good enough to produce well lit pics imo. The problem is focus. With no light source (between shots) the camera will struggle to focus. Therefore the shots my be bright enough with just the flash but they will be of poor quality. The floodlight type lights (Rhino Beam etc) are a very cheap way of achieving great self-take pics at night. I would recommend them highly.

Thanks mate .... smiles crossed with a bit of shock I reckon . I managed to find the deepest part of the lake , was very silty but thought it has to have visits from the residents at some point & so it proved to be. Was using a little stick with a couple of pva nuggets inside to stop the lead plugging & hold my hook bait in the upper layers. Worked a treat .

Nowt wrong with a big bream or tench! I tend to do quite a few scenic shots as well, never thought the ipad or phone did them justice. The scenic shot below, when I took it on my phone, the colour was missing from the sky, yet its the colours that make the picture. I also found with fish pics, even on timed self takes, I could get better framing.

Barbed Ronnie rig - losing fish

Don't necessarily think of a rig as just a pop-up or bottom bait rig, although the Ronnie rig is pretty much pop-up only. I have used both the D-rig and Multi rig with bottom baits. My standard 'bottom' bait rig can be used as a pop-up rig, just by using a shorter hair, tying the bait tight to the rig ring, and adding a pop-up weight. I can use the same D-rig, Multi rig or bottom bait rig for snowman baits. On heavily stocked lakes it may be that there are not enough freebies around your hookbait, that could be pellets or particles, or groundbait. With a pop-up it could be that fish are wary of picking a bait that is 2inches off the lakebed. A single or double may recognise its not nailed down. A 20 or 30 may not. The kicker may or may not be the problem, there can be a difference from water to water, area to area on hooking fish. On one water I fished a standard knotless knotted rig failed to hook fish. I had to add a proper line aligner to hook them. Just lengthening the tubing on a straight shank can create better hookholds, a bent or curved kicker is not always necessary.

    Carbon throwing sticks

I can get 2/3 boilies at a time around 80metres in anything other than a headwind. A stick does have an advantage in that you can put in around 5 boilies in at a time rather than just one, so it can be faster than a catapult! Straight or curved, you have to find what works best for you. I can use straight and slightly curved, but get some of the more severe curves and I am baiting the margins or my feet...

Hope you've had a good sleep - did you put your bivvy up , or is their a lodge of some kind for the weary traveller to crash out in ? . When the guys on the forum describe arriving at their lake after dark , finding the fish , casting out baiting up , bivvy up and finally getting to eat when I would have been asleep for an hour , well hats off to them I would have cast 2 rods into trees and had a massive hissy fit ! . πŸ˜ƒ

    freezer bait delivery?

They should send them in polystyrene boxes so they don't defrost. However, unlike the others I will never refreeze boilies. Best way to get 'frozen' boilies delivered is before they have been frozen after being dried.

Ten minutes after taking this pic I went in up to my waist and my boots still didn't touch the bottom.... I was hanging onto a bucking rod with one hand and the scaffold pole of the platform with the other... The rod was bucking due to the blooming great Brown Trout I had on the end... it went behind the rushes on the right of the pic and I tried to follow it and went in.... The Trout got hung up in the rushes and got off whilst I struggled to stop meself sinking into 9' of cold water with wellies and an oversuit on...
