I had a similar experience with a bailiff on my water, I was using a spod on a water with braided mainline and a tapered mono shockleader, the bailiff came wandering into the swim and asked me to pull my rods in for a rig check, (they were trying to stamp out dodgy rigs after a few had been found up trees etc - fair play in my book) after inspecting my rigs, (before asking me how it all worked - he admitted to not fishing for “silt pigs” (carp) as he loved his pike - begs the question why he’s inspecting carp rigs but still...) he then turned his eye on my spod rod and with a triumphant gleam in his eye pounced on my shockleader as all leaders are banned! I explained that a spod rod isn’t a “fishing” rod as such, so a carp can’t possibly be tethered by a spod, but he wasn’t having it. He took pictures of my spod rod, which I posed with rather fetchingly I felt, and reported me to the head bailiff, I was warned off for an instant lifetime ban... when the head bailiff saw the pics, he burst out laughing and told me I was in the clear, before explaining to the other bailiff exactly why someone would have a shockleader on a spod rod...

Keeping things simple is the way forward mate, I’m always tinkering with rigs admittedly when at home, but on the bank i revert to simple rigs I know work, coupled with a bait I have complete confidence in means I can rest assured that those two elements are working for me, I can “forget” about them and concentrate on location and tactics. The best rig in the world can’t catch a carp that isn’t there!

That 10lb pike from the double take has put on weight, I had it again today at 12lb. The twisted mouth and scar on the back was the give away. Caught this time on a dead roach.
    I also had another Jack.

The jack was lightly hooked and the hooks fell out in the net. Mackeral tail for that

I think a few of us have done the same thing, worked hard all week, got away to fish, arrived at the lake and just jumped in any swim.
I did it at Nazeing, I've done it elsewhere, and quite probably not caught because of it.
At Earith I was 'lucky', the research or previous prebaiting before fishing or at the end of the previous session kept me catching, if I did have to jump in 'any swim'. Arriving at 11 or 12 at night and casting out knowing the swim often caught me fish before having set the bivvy up.
When I walked around Nazeing Lagoons looking first before setting up, even in winter, I tended to catch. Just turning up and jumping in didn't.
I guess I can be lucky, but I grew up looking for fish be it tench, bream or carp, on 25acre and 7 acre lakes. Without realising it, I was learning.
Fishing Taverham I did the same, looked for fish, and twigged that the fish loved fish meals, comparing result of my bird food bait to fish meals. The addition of salmon oil...
Even Alton, I would say my fishing was pretty successful. At least twice every week I walked Sky around it, I had mental pictures of many areas, I had put bait in a few.
I went through spells of relationships cutting fishing time. At Earith or at Ardleigh it didn't cut down the numbers of fish caught, previous research again.
Now being single I only have work and money to consider to limit my fishing.

Two fish in Brackens eluded me, Sam's and Digit. I caught most of the other 30's including 2 that had not been caught at 30 before, one not since it had been stocked at double figures, yet despite fishing where Sam's and Digit came from mostly, I never landed them.

I think a lot of the problem with braid hook links is due to crayfish, and for you poisson chat fiddling with rigs.

Some orange blaze fluorescent enamel to recolour the tops of some bright yellow marker floats that I struggle to see and a new pair of TFG Explorer boots after my 5year old pair sole came free while walking round Alton Water today.

Essential oils, make sure you get 100% quality, many aromatherapy oils are cut with a carrier.
Cut with olive or coconut oil is OK, but some of the oils use baby oil type carriers

Lovely rods, I have certainly had some fun landing carp on mine.. I have several others and they all get used when needed..  they are never going to be as good as my modern stuff.. but good fun when you do use them..

They are a pain in the bum to do but the rod certainly looks better for them....

My old MkIV is a kit rod, mullered and soft with a bit of delamination near the butt... retired now sadly...

Not sure if they add strength, but they do add weight and stiffen the action.

Not that I would ever think you would, but a properly finished cane rod sells for loadsamoney...
That means getting the same number of 'whips' on every ring past the foot

If i decide to whip the intermediates ( which i probably will ) luckily I can still see where the original intermediate whips were so i should be able to get them back about right.. I don't think I would ever sell any of my vintage stuff, I have 5 built cane rods in all and they all get well used.. hence this one being refurbished.

Problem is different manufacturers have different sizes.
In some I'm xl or large top, yet trousers are either medium or large. Chest size is 42, with 16 collar in shirts.
Hard part is the 32/34 waist with 32/33 inside leg, exactly as I was when I left school, 24 years ago!

They don't usually float when they go off, the oil goes rancid and becomes inedible and I think toxic.
Frank and probably Greekski know more than me on that.
A very worthwhile tactic anyway, some smaller sized pellets in a batch often do float until they have taken on water and break the water surface tension.
I use the method on Bromeswell regularly to get fish right into the margins, then fish a free lined bait on the surface hanging off the rod tip. It is where a nice brown trimmed pop-up really scores...

You are spot on about inflows giving oxygen and also stirring the bottom, my last house was a two minute walk from our canal ( which I fished for twenty odd years for carp ) there was one part with a high bank and field on the opposite side, the farmer used to pump water out of the canal in late evenings, the water was pumped up the steep bank into a tanker and when the tanker was full the overflow would come down a return pipe back in the canal causing a powerful wash which stirred up the bottom and at the same time put lots of needed oxygen back into the water... I used to regularly bait and fish areas 25 yards either side of the pump.. superb fishing.. I really miss that canal now I have moved.

Oh, another good spot can be inflows. A number of canals have top-up reservoirs, which allow water lost through locks to be topped up, or even incoming streams. These provide oxygen as well as offering food spots.

    As for dogs...
I used to have a Shetland Sheepdog, I had made some fishmeal boilies which I had coloured blue. The little git ate about a kilo of the 5k I had made. For the next week he was excreting blue.
