Cheers all! Some good info. Have used a fair range of gear myself in the past, so I'm basing choices a lot on what I already know I like and what I haven't liked in the past.

Yup, delks are cool. I had three TXi's with the RX pro receiver in my last kit. Very nice! Frankly though, and this is just my opinion, for the job they do they do not justify the price tag over many other alarms. I honestly think, worth the money or not, the prices would have had to reduce over time if they weren't so fashionable. Did consider the plus models, or the EVs, but I do want a receiver, and as I don't feel the need to shout "COME ON" after I net every fish, I don't really think I need delks at the mo! ;P Yeah they've changed the Nash alarms and added features etc, and they don't have the adjustability of delks. But the reviews are good, and they're borderline cheap enough that if I really hate them I can replace them in the future anyway. Understated looks, and they bleep when the line moves. Job done.

The Sonik rods tempt me because genuinely I've not seen a better rod for the price yet! I had them previously in 2.75, and they did me fine. My reasons for looking at the 3s, firstly there are places around me where being able to chuck a PVA bag a fair distance is an advantage, and secondly I have a nice pike water near me. In the dead of winter when the carp aren't playing I may well be tempted to chuck a deadbait at them. I don't want 2 sets of rods, and the 3s would put up with this occasionally. Lighter and I'd be worried! We'll see though. Wouldn't go to 3.25! The amount of times I've seen huge big pit reels on broomstick rods fishing 2 acre lakes! Just daft, although I guess you have to tackle up for the maximum requirement you'll put on your gear, and accept that it's over doing it in a lot of situations. Most can't afford loads of rods and who am I to judge.

Yeah I've also looked at a bunch of second hand gear, and cheaper ways of getting it, but call me a snob, I like to spend time un-boxing it, setting it all up for the first time, and adding new stuff over time. Not only that, but if something knackers up I like to have somewhere local to take it back too! My local shop have been good with that kind of stuff in the past. Good fun walking around and choosing stuff you can see off the shelves as well.

Gonna be fun anyway! And a trip to a fail safe runs puddle on Friday! Might be into 5lbers but should at least get some runs.

I did put a quick catch report in Septembers catches, but thought I'd give a break down of the session in full, with a bad pic of the other side as well as the original in the report section.

I was aiming to fish from Thursday to Saturday rather than Friday to Sunday, as I was worried about the lake being busy over the weekend, but a job interview on Thursday meant I would have arrived in the dark.

When I arrived at Nazeing I wasn't decided whether to fish the Lagoons, or Brackens. I started off with a walk around Brackens, where there was only 1 angler. I put the car in the car park, and had a look over at the lagoons, where there were 5 anglers in a row on the Movie Bank, a couple on the Causeway and a couple on the Bracken bank, which to me was crowded, and meant my first choice area had a lot of lines in it.

This was the first time with the new bait, for the lagoons it wouldn't have been a major worry as Crays get onto any bait, but for Brackens I hadn't been prebaiting. I grabbed a few Solar Seafood Takeaway Boilies and dropped into the snags for a look. There were fish there, and as I dropped a couple of baits in, the carp took them on the drop!
A few more baits and the fish clouded the bottom up as they cleaned them up.
    Confidence sorted!

I couldn't fish the two swims that may have given me access to the front of the snags, the one angler was in one, and his mate was coming down later, so I left the next door swim free, and chose to fish on the other side of the lake at the opposite end of the lake, where I thought some fish would have holed up in the weedbeds.

A quick dig with the marker rod and I discovered my favourite bar had grown over with a thin spread of weed, but still fishable. I put around 60 boilies on stringers in the area, a mix of freezer and shelf life baits and cast a snowman rig on my favoured running lead with slack line on my right hand rod.

The left I aimed at the front of the weed to the left of the island to start with, but when an angler set up in Boards later in the afternoon, I quietly reeled in as his rod was extremely close to mine. Never mind I have a safe margin to my left, which I have caught from in the past, and I could sneak some freebies in by hand.

Friday night was quiet, I didn't see or hear a thing, and was a bit miffed at blanking. Saturday I decided on a walk around the lagoon, as I went to top up my water bottle.
Discovering around 15 anglers on there and a chat with one revealed it was quiet I decided to stay where I was.

On reeling in in the morning I had clipped up, so the recast with a stringer of 12 baits was easy to the same spot, and the left was even easier. The right hand hair, for some reason I decided to shorten slightly, slightly better in the weed.

At almost exactly midnight the line pulled tight on the right hand rod, just pulled tight, no more line taken, so I struck into it. The rod was locked up immediately, but didn't budge, nothing except a few kicks every now and again. The fish was staying in the weed, just over the bar, and wouldn't move. Putting as much pressure on as I dared it came free into open water, where it played straight and simple in front of me, and into the net first time of asking, where I discovered its head was totally covered in weed.

Leaving the net in the water, I got the camera, sling, scales and cradle, zeroed and sorted. I lifted the net onto the cradle and sling, then slid the net out of the way and unhooked the fish before weighing it at just over 24lbs.

I wasn't really worried about pics as I have caught a few 20lb commons before, but this one had a nude patch on one shoulder, so I just grabbed a couple for identification.

I can say that my rigs haven't really changed since 2008, a hair sliding up and down the shank with line aligner on a size 6 hook, the only difference is I had gone back to Kryston Jackal as the colour was closest to the weed. When I got it in, the coating had been totally stripped from the hooklink.

My apologies for the picture quality, but I really didn't need to keep the fish out for too long, so I just zipped a couple of quickies.

I think stink bags have a lot to answer for, people just throw them in their tackle shed and don't dry their gear properly

After using the stick over a 3 day session, I can put 18mm boilies about 130 yards (when I hit it right) I'm confident that with more practice the consistency & distance will improve.

Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase.

There's a very simple & effective trick for Tigernuts at Churn Pool.

Step 1.  Distract Andy. I've found beer or a single malt to be very effective.

    Step 2.  Steal his Tigernuts.
