Who has one or has held one of these? I am looking at the possibility and wanted to get some opinions as to quality and reliability. Some of the articles that I have read are more than a little thick as far as good Ratings. Yet the ratings are by someone that may be biased. I wanted to hear from you the Carp Anglers on the forum.

Hi Hoppy.

I have held one and messed around with it and am very impressed. Having been a 10000xt user for some time now I could never understand why they got rid of the ultra slow oscillation and this new real has exactly that again plus is much lighter with the mag body. The one that I held felt very good and I would expect the same quality as normal from Shimano. They are expensive but I was impressed enough to order a set of three which should be with me early February. Probably just in time for the lake to freeze over.

Hello moorsey, First of all, Thank You for the reply! I was toying with the thought of buying them and wanted to hear from some of you on the forum. The most impressive thing to me about them will be the weight. I know the Shimano name and TRUST it!

Im lucky enough to own a set as work was going well last year so i brought myself a set of the Aereo technuim mags xsb.

They are without a doubt the best reels out there in terms of build looks and playing fish on you really wont believe it until you have a set so get em. :)

I wanted to say Thank You to the Veal's Tackle personnel. They made it possible for me to get the reels to the USA. I have loaded them with line and look forward to the oppertunity to fish with them. If either of you have a need or even a want for New Gear, I reccomend that you check with this vendor as they are Fantastic!

jowlermajor,

I haven't been on this forum in a couple of days and had missed your post. Yes, it was Good to speak with you on the phone a couple of weeks ago. Yes the reels arrived her in Great working order. I have only been out to cast them to this point, but will try my luck this weekend. I can again say that your firm has earned my trust and I am very satisfied with your service. Thanks for the Hello and a Wish for Screaming Alarms for you as well.

A mate of mine bought a set back in may, he had them delivered to my house so the mrs didn't find out until they were on his rods.

I took them for a session to spool them up and I used them for a 48hour session.

I was impressed, ultra smooth and gave a feeling of finesse on the rods, anyone coming from a match/pleasure background will understand the feeling. I was also lucky enough to catch a couple of fish with one being a good lump so I got to test out the real workings of the reel, and again the drag was immaculate and the power to wind was awesome always in control other than they pick up so much line, more than I was used to but again this helps keep everything tight so will stop rod bounce when winding and bumping fish off.

But there were a couple of parts to them that for 500 quid really should be better.

There are parts made of cheap thin plastic, purely to save weight. However for 500 quid you have got to feel these will break.

One of these parts is the anti reverse switch on the bottom of the reel, drop the reel or place it down a bit heavily and you could cause a major problem which will be costly. The other part is the cap on the reel handle, again too lightweight and if it cracks you will have to replace. The last part is the plastic collar for e reel handle, tacky.

While these are minor to most people I would prefer a couple of grams more and have ally or titanium fittings.

On the whole they were very good and I would buy them but I would look for the 2009 xsa models which some shops still have a few kicking about and can be picked up brand new for around £350 a go so much more reasonable.

coops_northants,

Thank You for the info and I will be more aware of the shortfalls as I use them. I hope to never need to replace any of the parts as this is a Big Pain for those of us in the USA! Shimmy will not provide any service to us on Euro or Asian reels. This is a Very Sore Subject for those of us with Shimmy products!!
