Adjustable zig rig help?

Recommended Posts

Carpbell, Please don't take this the wrong way. My original reply wasn't said to try and get a negative response from you and I don' think it could be taken as trolling. All I was trying to say is that telling someone who asks about adjustable zigs to go and learn how to fly fish isn't helpful. Personally I don't like adjustable zigs because I find they can sometimes tangle on long casts (so we agree there) but the OP has started to use them and would like info/advice on usage. 10 years ago I fished a lake (layer pits) that more fish were caught on zigs at distance than conventional baits so I'm happy to comment given my experience. At the time no-one had heard of zig bugs but a few of us anglers there used Boobies as our zigs......... Now they're sold as zig bugs but the way we used to fish them was similar to trout fishing.

Its just takes a bit of practice fella, i use pike sunken floats for my zig fishing, you can experiment, with, 1,2 and 3 ft zigs, i also use normal leads with a large bore running ring and pva nuggets around the hook. When the lead hits the water slowly lift the rod up towards you until you feel the donk of the lead hitting the bottom.

My mate tried 2 rods on adjustable zigs the other night not they wouldn't come up out of the weed when they weren't tangled on the cast. To say he was frustrated is an understatement. Normal zigs saved the day - no probs, well they did in my opinion.

He was using the fox kit - so all the right bits and bobs - maybe you need an even more buoyant float.

Unless the water is so deep that it makes casting impossible - I think I'll stick to normal zigs.

Whilst the fly fishing replys are off topic - I've incorporated a bit of it in surface fishing and zigs, which is all I think you can do. To go down the pure fly fishing route is impossible for most specialist carp venues because of the bankside vegetation, trees - distances involved, line capacity, Rod TC's and actions - etc etc.

This is the home-made zig rig which I use. The distance from float to hook can be set to any length (including distances exceeding your rod length). From there the distance to the hook can be adjusted to any depth by simply letting line out (like any typical adjustable zig). The whole thing casts perfectly and never tangles.

Been away from carp fishing, fishing all together for a good 3 years now and decided to get back into it. I'm having trouble with the adjustable zig rig. When i was fishing a few weeks ago i got talking to the guy in the next peg and he was fishing the adjustable zig rig with a 40g candle float (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271199609618?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649)

So i thought id give it a try with the same float and a 2oz lead with the zig aligna. Im using my marker rod to get depth but when im using my zig rig the float isnt coming up to the surface at all. Im using a marker float ring rig (http://www.nashtackle.co.uk/uploads/optimized/thumb_2556_1299502429_1252011125.jpg) to attatch my lead so the line can flow through it smoothly. But the float isnt coming up? any ideas

im using the exact set up as this dude showed me and he was catching on it. Duno what im doing wrong this is a new concept to me. Cheers

havent read any of the other comments, but when i first started using the fox halo adjustable zig I couldnt get it to pop up the top, found out my hooklink kept tangling around the float, try to attach a pva nuddget to stop it getting tangled?...

I take it that's PVA tape holding the hook in place for the cast. You seem to have sorted all the probs mentioned and the float would be buoyant enough to come up through weed where others fail. Nice one like it!

Yes, a quick link whipped onto a wooden barbecue skewer shoved through a table tennis ball and cork, glued with "No Nails" and sprayed black.

Yes a couple of clockwise turns of pva tape then wind hook link anticlockwise and nick hook into pva.

Et voila - a carp grenade

I was going to say I hope you got it patented and if not I wonder which money grabbing company will rip this fantastic idea off first or be the first to claim they came up with the idea of the no tangle pva adjustable zig grenade.

No it is not patented. I am happy if someone can make money from it but it is such a simple DIY job. It will be difficult for someone to claim they invented it because it is already in print in my first book.

the no tangle pva adjustable zig grenade is a rather snappy title but I call it The Pocket Zig because it is small and neat.
