Swimmapper

Just seen this on Fox internationals page.

I've thought before with technology someone would develop an app where you could share information about swims based on your own records.

From a personal level it looks good, not so sure on if you're fishing a campaign type water but I guess that depends on how private you can keep your notes from contacts on the app.

What are swim credits , i guess you get the App free but eventually have to pay to advance it.

Yeah, looks like you get 5 free swims. Then you can buy more it's £1.50 for ten swims. Or sign your mates up and get free credits.

Everything costs money and to be honest you're paying for convenience of having everything stored digitally.

People will shun it for paper and pen, or other free ways. I guess it's each to their own and how people want to do it.

Seen it, have some doubts about privacy.

Must admit I do have a very good memory for swims and lakes. If anyone has read my Taverham Mills write-up you'll know how good.

Then of course we have the must pay after advanced use of an app, but that is common in any application for iPads etc. to advance.

I have no issue with paying. Why does everyone seem to want everything for free in this day and age. I bet it cost fox a fair few quid to develop. 15p per swim, not exactly daylight robbery is it! Lol

As for doing your own research - it's me who is going to be putting the details down on there, just as I do now, only on the app rather than in my notes section on the phone.

You have to agree to share information, you can't just access someone's findings. This is just a more convenient way of storing notes and details.

I can understand some of the concerns and if you're on a water which you want to keep totally private and to yourself or your findings then use something else, as with any cloud based storage you run the risk of someone, somewhere being able to access your notes.

As far as individuals are concerned it's only your findings that are accessible to you, which you can choose to share or not with your friends, you can send a swims details to someone but keep the rest of your hard work to yourself. Much the same as people may do now if fishing a new venue they know others have and putting in a call for a bit of advice.

I still think most would prefer to figure out a venue for themselves, than relying on others hardwork. Especially if fishing a season on it, it's a bit different if you're fishing a day ticket as a one off and you're only there for 24 hours.

Also lakes change from year to year, what was once a productive spot may stop being so etc.

Nice little app, certainly would not have been cheap to produce.  My money will be on them releasing a day ticket guide that has marked swims in it.

As for the app, has some nice little features, lets you share swim info if you are working a lake with other people.  I can also see why some wouldn't want to use it though

It would only take not naming the lakes by their real name with in the app, for it to be safe from any prying eyes surely. Good luck to anyone with enough time to search through loads of images trying to recognise something.

Pretty sure the guys at fox will have better things to spend time on .

It does use gps and location services if you want it to.

Also they couldn't discern between who's a good angler and who's not. Eventually there'd be too much noise from too many notes/different anglers views to make it any use to them.

How usable the data is will depend on how much money they have spent on the backend for the app and how the data is stored, will highly depend on how its is indexed and any metadata that is added on storing as to how easy it will be get useful info from it, in a strange twist the notes might yield info on potential new tackle ideas.  Anyway this is carp.com and not stackoverflow so I will knock the IT talk off
