Hi guys

so after talking about social with a couple of members i would like to set one up but before i do i would like to know what every ones expectations are

ie just a full lake booking ?

prizes ie

most fish?

Bigest catch?

ect

food and drink provided ??

any ideas?

the venues i have are cromwell

which isn't very local to me but would love to fish loads of available dates from end of july right through to september

Eric's willows which is fairly local ?

any interest in either ??

and would people prefer a mid week booking or weekend 48hrs 72hrs?

I think  you first have to decide what sort of a social you want, is it fishing based or is this a sideline to a camping, barby, and booze trip, next its about numbers, if you go midweek they will be lower due to people not being able to afford losing a couple of days wages, understandable. Next, is venue, yep a whole lake is the most preferable, at least you arent split up too much and get some unconnected idiots in the middle, i would like to see everyone catch at least something, so i wouldnt choose a windswept pit, on the other hand i wouldnt choose a rammed carp puddle. Then you have to consider cost, the booking once done is down to you, if you book for twelve and six turn up, you still get charged for twelve, over 72 hours thats a big cost. Foood, Barby is great if you can get transport close to your pegs without killing yourself, otherwise a local takeaway and a bit of time away is a better option. Duration, some people will have commitments that mean long stays are not onand unforeseen circumstances may occur, we just did a 48, one guy was called away without wetting a line, myself could only do 24 owing to my wifes condition and the fact i felt stinky winky and one of the other guys had to work next day, so the help of another, in my case Ianfrog, may be neede or desired, dont jump without thinking and dont go too big or you may regret it. Good luck with this one, you will make some great mates, prizes, it aint a contest, your prize will be the pals you make.

Agree.

When I have a social with my mates we sometimes go with a fiver for biggest fish just for a laugh. If you have a prize for most fish it's no longer a social; that competitive spirit means the time is spent angling instead of socialising. Biggest fish makes it a lottery, anyone can win with just the one bite.

I've been on a few socials and tbh I had a great time... loads of banter, plenty of fish, and got to know a few folks I'd never normally have met....

I agree with the no prizes.... it will make it a competition... Some of the socials that I went on were  Carpology ones (through their now defunct forum)... the magazine donated a few bits to be raffled off... the raffle, a few ales in the lodge at Tall Trees, and a takeaway was a good craic.... you can have a good laugh... as for imports... well that's an entirely different argument and I have to say, if I ever catch a 30 I'm not gonna be asking to see it's passport for it to count... as I suspect would most folks..

Big carp are so rare in my world I can't afford to be picky:(

We have this trophy that goes to the best angler or just for being the life & sole  of that particular social. Quite a few names on it now ..... welders son Alan is in possession of it at the moment . Nige pointed out I'll get my name on it now with my recent social session & With the biggest fish out of Horseshoe at last year's social  , Be nice to look back in decades to come & see all the different names on there & the memories it will invoke 8)

This is exactly why i was asking before just steaming ahead ,

for me i was just expecting a full lake booking  for  a good bit of banter a chance to meet some good lads to maybe learn from with a couple of ales if people wanted and some time way from the rods to eat ,take away ,                   bbq (weather permitting)

i would be more than happy for no prizes as it takes the pressure and seriousness off the event so it can be more enjoyable

but i do like the idea of people going home with something less serious and a little and more fun as a  little memento ,which  maybe people could come up with ideas for spur of the moment or on the lake when we meet?

I can tell you now Dave it's not about the trophy for anyone. My better half made it for everyone.

It's got 5 years of socials on there now it's all about the memories mate .

Do you know if their is to be another social this year,

I wont be late for the BBQ this time :D

Already been on a couple this year mate & already got another two on the calendar , so can't see any of the regular social organisers including me sorting anything else out  . I'm thinking maybe another meet up at Horseshoe mid to late September maybe ? As there were a few that dropped out of last year's & I know mufty fancies a session on there as do a few others.  just turn up & fish where you like no need to book pegs then or collect money off people. Can still use the bbq facilities etc .

All it would take to make life easy is everybody who turns up, to already have the carp society membership, then it's just a case of paying for the hours you want to do at 1£ an hour .

I came so close to that trophy , :D

David, Alan still treasures the trophy but will be happy to hand it, personally, to it's next adjudged recipient.
