Had the same conversations Kev,  hence the question .. not Good times !!!  We've got  a pump turning up Thursday to drain a lake to see what's left. scales everywhere every time we go up there , so it's not looking hopeful .

How much longer can this go on? I know many clubs have now given up their river stretches as the rivers have been pillaged. Without being overdramatic, but is fishing outside the confines of a fenced of mud pool going to become totally fruitless. I'm fishing the rivers near me currently and it's no easy going. For any species. Fish of notable size are few and far between. A lady came out of her house backing on to the river last week and told me she sees different groups of otters pretty regularly on her land. And used to find a multitude of species half eaten on her property. It's really frustrating. I'd like to know who's bright idea it was to reintroduce this vermin. Why arnt the environment agency addressing this?  A cull has got to be enforced surely before it's too late

Out of  interest , you guys who had the big increases in renewal price , are your venues fenced ?

The one I'm leaving is yes.

I had another ticket lined up which has jumped from 650 to 1100 quid just like that. Not fenced either. Needless to say I won't be joining lol.

thats ridiculous, must be trying to make as much money as possible before the otters arrive.

I wouldn't hold your breath buddy. Not gonna happen.

I would... it's not a certainty yet but to my knowledge and those within the environmental sector, things like the Water Framework Directive and some EU enviro policies have been signed over to UK law and committed to post brexit. what hasn't been, and doesnt seem like there is a plan to, is EU protection designations, both land and animals, so SSSIs, SPAs, etc. There's still time for it to happen, and there is no clarity on what happens in the interim period if they aren't but it could be a small period of minimal protections...

I've heard on the grapevine they've already arrived!

😮

So basically species are potentially no longer protected?

Would that also mean all waters on SSSI's could be fenced if the land owner funded it?

In the most simple format, yes. It would also mean an unofficial cull would be possible. I do doubt however that the NE would let the designations drop completely before being re-designated but if they aren't in UK Law then there will be loopholes for sure to avoid having to deal with the government. I believe that things like SSSIs, etc. would be optional for landowners to comply with, which currently they aren't, a total disgrace IMO, imagine someone just sending you a letter going along the lines of "your 60 acres of land is now a designated site, you MUST comply with everything we say or face prosecution, you also can't take legal action against us over the designation as it's law itself." Happened to WDNAC at ringstead.

I believe it is also an opportunity to get carp added to the native species listings when designations, etc. are re-written. A HUGE step forward IMO

Sounds like there trying to pay for a fence with that hike in price mate .

Would you all say it's been just under a decade of otter problems becoming more apparent  , with the last 5 years really hitting home ?   Dread to think what the next 5 years will be like. unless there are changes in law & numbers are controlled.

This thread has actually made my mind up for the plans for this year , it's got to be a  fenced venue I'm done fishing waters getting nailed by otters. Think I'll get another Horseshoe ticket .

@greekskii can only hope some of what you say might come into fruition. Good to see you posting again 😎

It's all to do with Natural England I think?

There's nothing natural about prison style fences going up all over the country.  Not just fishing lakes either there's a big wetlands bird sanctuary south of me that's having to fence to protect the birds.  You never know though the RSPB getting involved might be the key to change long term . They've starting on the ducks on our lake now the fish are in short supply !

Living where you do, Phil, Horseshoe makes a lot of sense. Too much of a trek for me to do it on a regular basis or I'd be joining you.

Ian.

Shame. I thought you'd be the man for that water mate.

I would love to be, but until I can get life sorted it will have to stay on the back burner.

Well I can't beat that as a Postie , about 2 hours indoor prep. followed by about 4 hours outside walking delivery .

I guess if you wanted some cheap particles you'd know where to go ! , bean misshapes ?? .
