An active members private forum

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

I have noticed a lot of lurkers and non posting members that are still active but don't seem to post ever I just think a lot of active members are giving all there ideas away for free, with no input or interaction from others, who will be profiting from this knowledge, I was on another forum where this actively encouraged people to post so they could also gain access to this, it would be nice to have an area where people could talk openly without fear of having there ideas nobbled and I believe would lead to some great ideas and interactions amongst us all and encourage non posters to post rather than just lurk

I used to belong And administrate a few specialist forums for something else and we had private sections of the forums for “professionals“ to discuss things general public were not supposed to see they ended up being the busiest part of the forums as they were invisible to guests and general members. people who we felt earned the right to see them as they had to be voted in and approved Got to even know about these sections
probably on here there are moderator and admin boards that no one sees or knows about

I also found that but found the ones who had earned there way in still went to the other bit to help people out and keep that ticking over, personally I just think people could go more in depth about what they are doing behind a wall, which would be nice

Not quite sure what you can talk about in a “Fishing “private area that isn’t said already or can be found on any of the other sites or you tube

I just think you could be more specific about your own fishing, go into more detail and have more open honest conversations without the risk of your ideas being blown before you even had the chance to act on them

Hmm

possibly carp anglers are inherently secretive lol

Secret squirrel club ftw

The signature of the great IanD:

The first rule of Bait Boat Club is don't talk about Bait Boat Club.

Over the years we've seen quite a few fish pics with the background blacked out or cropped to hide the venue.  I've even done it.  Imo we don't need a 'pro' sub-forum; if you have info you only wish to share with certain members, the pm function is always there.  The old Carp Anglers Group in North America charged membership and non-paying users didn't have access to some of the boards, but I think despite the work of some great guys on the site it's shrunk a lot from what it was 20 years ago.  When we're trying to advance a sport, promoting exclusivity (even for security reasons) just seems counter productive.

I wouldn't think of it as a pro club, just more for everyone who contributes to the forum regularly, regardless of skill level,

I just think there are a lot of non contributors who are regularly browsing without putting much back and would like to see that improve

I'm surprised that this would come from you Elmo.  As you seem to of benefited a fair bit with members being open with there knowledge on here , since you joined . There's always been more watching than posting even back when the forum was far busier & there always will be mate . Agree though it would be great to get a % of them joining in .

I would suggest that if you have a private (elite?) section where all the interesting stuff is discussed, then newcomers will only see the more boring stuff and the forum will go into decline.

Personally, I have learned a great deal more from the feedback I have had by sharing ideas. Sharing ideas is not a charitable donation to the less informed. It is a way to improve your own knowledge.

I totally agree, I have benefitted lots from being on here and the active members have helped me no end, I am also happy to pay that forward and help anyone I can, my suggestion isn't aimed at an elite core of skilled anglers but anyone who is posting regularly beginner or whoever, just see it as a perk for regular contribution and interaction, not as a badge of skill level

I don't think of it as an elite, more just a bonus area for regulars, I completely agree though that you learn more from interaction, and from sharing ideas, I don't think it would make the forum go into decline as I think it may encourage people that don't post to get more active

I thought the whole point of this forum was to share knowledge and help others? There’s only a small community here and I reckon creating a private section would only make it smaller 🤔

I agree and am all for sharing knowledge and helping others, that wouldn't change from my point of view, I just think regular contributers could have an area where they could be more open and honest about there own situations and could have more open conversations, it did seem to work on the other place that had it everyone seemed to post more to gain access and all the people already in it carried on posting everywhere on the forum nothing changed that much, but a little freedom for regulars

The hard thing is setting it up.

I would have to approve the members into a new section, which is easy enough, but then how do you choose who is suitable?

You would need a voting system to approve new inner members.

I must admit when I make a post with advice I don't tend to give everything away, but I do write it so that with a little thought you can work out the 'missing link'.

I think our hardest fight in any forum is competing against Youtube Facebook and the various groups, and where information is total.

I think to start with you could just include regular Contributers, then just allow Members to Suggest people they think are suitable for it or would benefit etc and most if the time people will agree anyway or come up with some damning evidence against,

It was just an idea anyway and I think it might be nice to have an area where you don't have to leave things out 👍

If I was on there, I'd still leave "things out". Can't be giving all your secrets away Haha.

That's fair enough, when I find the edge 😁 I may also do similar

Carrier bag sized pva is one thing on for this weekend, need a bait boat to cast em but as long as I can find a close margin they might be OK 😳

I have to agree with this.

I am more open than most about what I do and how I catch carp, but there is ALWAYS something that I hold back lol. It's good angling innit, an edge is only an edge of you're the only one doing it.

Problem I can see is that you then get the accusations thrown around of a "clique" appearing.

I am a member of a golf forum as well, have been on there a fair number of years. Consequently you get the long standing membership, the vast majority of whom have actually met each other in "real life" being accused of being one such "clique" and alienating themselves from the rest of the forum.
